Teletext Viewer Opinion/Chat Pages: House Rules
Use of the Pages
1.Teletext expects users of its viewer opinion/chat pages to treat other users and the forum with respect. The pages are a place for good-natured debate and users must not seek to use the pages to provoke conflict and abuse other users or act in any way which is unlawful.
Editing
2.The pages are moderated and compiled through entries being chosen for broadcast at a selected point or points during the day/week. Entries are selected on editorial merit based on space and time (ie the time of updates) constraints. So sending an entry gives no certainty that the entry will be broadcast at any time or at all. This policy means that while Teletext seeks to offer a wide range of views, some authors may appear more often than others.
3. Teletext is licensed by Ofcom and entries may be edited or rejected to ensure compliance with Ofcom’s Broadcasting Code. A full copy of the code can be found at http://www.ofcom.org.uk/tv/ifi/codes/bcode/.
4. Teletext also reserves the right to edit entries in order to make the text readable/clear and to comply with these rules, while ensuring its editing practices comply with Ofcom's Broadcasting Rules on fairness.
Licence and Right to use.
5. By sending an entry to our viewer opinion/chat pages the sender is: (a) agreeing to grant to Teletext, free of charge, permission to use the material in any way it wants on any of Teletext services in any media, such permission to include editing and adapting it for operational and editorial reasons,. (b) warranting that the entry is their own work or that they have the copyright or other permission to distribute the entry electronically to Teletext for use on Teletext's services.
Entries which will be rejected /edited.6. Teletext reserves the right to reject any entries without giving a reason and the Editor’s decision on the matter will be final.
7. Teletext will reject any contribution that is deemed by Teletext to be:
- Racist
- Sexist
- Homophobic
- Sectarian
- Obscene
- Harassing, abusive or threatening
- Harmful
- Otherwise unlawful , or encouraging unlawful activity Liable to expose Teletext to any potential legal risk, including the laws of Libel and Contempt of Court.
Action may be taken toward the sender of the contribution as set out below.
8. Entries must: - not include personal contact details (other than name and home town, as advertised on screen) or sequences of numbers that could be used for personal contact - not include URLs to any other website, or any embedded images; - be written in the English language; - not seek to advertise a commercial venture.
Multiple User Names
9. The use of multiple usernames/aliases is discouraged and anyone found to be using another person’s accepted username without permission will be subject to appropriate action.
Breaches of these Rules
10. If the breach of the rules is considered serious enough to warrant it, Teletext reserves the right to bar the user for their first offence. This means that the user’s entries will not be used at any time. Teletext also reserves the right to pass any materials to the relevant authorities if it considers said materials to be in breach of the law.
11. For less serious breaches Teletext will issue the user with a first warning. If the user found to be in breach of the rules commits a further breach, a second and final warning will be given. If a further breach is committed at any time, the user will be permanently barred.
Complaints
12. Complaints about Teletext’s viewer opinion/chat pages should be made to the Duty Editor by e-mail at dutyeditor@teletext.co.uk, or by telephone on 0208 323 5650 (7am-11pm every day).
13. The duty editor will undertake an investigation into your complaint and report back to you promptly with the outcome and any further action to be taken.
14. No correspondence will be entered into by the editors of the specific viewer opinion/chat pages.
15. Teletext will not tolerate any harassment of its staff or the staff of any other third party contracted in connection with the provision of its viewer opinion/chat pages and reserves the right to protect its staff from harassment, including barring calls and passing details to relevant authorities.
Amendment of House Rules
16. These rules may be amended from time to time by Teletext.
